Stripe Payout and Merchant Transaction Fees | Walla Support Center
Understanding how Stripe fees work helps to accurately track your earnings and reconcile your reports. This article explains the two main fee types associated with Stripe: the payout fee charged when funds transfer to your bank, and the merchant transaction fee charged when you process payments.
What is a Stripe payout fee?
The payout fee is made up of two parts: 0.25% of the payout amount, plus a flat $0.25 per payout. This is charged by Stripe each time funds are transferred from your Stripe account to your bank account.
Example: If you're transferring $100, the fee would be 0.25% of $100 ($0.25) plus the $0.25 flat fee — a total of $0.50.
When are payout fees deducted?
Payout fees are deducted daily, and here's the key thing to keep in mind: the fee is always calculated based on your previous payout, not the one it appears alongside in the Payouts Report.
Example: If your payout on March 16th is $3,000, the fee breaks down as:
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| 0.25% of $3,000 | $7.50 |
| Flat fee | $0.25 |
| Total payout fee | $7.75 |
You'll see that $7.75 listed with your March 17th payout in the Payouts Report — not March 16th. Keep that timing in mind when reconciling.
Stripe Merchant Transaction Fees
| Payment Type | Fee |
|---|---|
| Online, keyed, and stored card payments | 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction |
| In-person payments (Terminal) | 2.7% + $0.05 per transaction |
| International cards | Additional 1.5% surcharge per transaction |
Note: When a card is swiped using a saved shortcut rather than manually entered, Stripe treats it as a stored card transaction — so the 2.9% + $0.30 rate applies.
What is a Stripe merchant transaction fee?
The merchant fee, also called a payment or transaction fee, is what Stripe charges to process each payment you receive.
- Online payments, manually keyed entries, and stored card transactions: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction
- In-person payments using a card reader (Terminal): 2.7% + $0.05 per transaction
- International cards carry an additional 1.5% surcharge
Examples
| Scenario | Amount |
Calculation |
Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online payment | $10.00 | 2.9% of $10 ($0.29) + $0.30 | $0.59 |
| In-person (Terminal) | $50.00 | 2.7% of $50 ($1.35) + $0.05 | $1.40 |
When are merchant fees deducted?
Merchant fees are applied to all credit card transactions and are deducted after tax is collected.
Does Stripe charge a processing fee for refunds?
No — Stripe does not charge a separate fee for refunds. Keep in mind, though, that the original transaction fee (2.9% + $0.30 or 2.7% + $0.05) is not returned when a refund is issued.
